Where things stand
WoW Forever was revealed at BlizzCon on September 12, 2026. The paladin talent trees were shown on day one and detailed in the day-two deep dive. Beta opens Thursday September 17 with a level 30 cap, so none of the 31-point capstone talents can be tested before launch, expected in November. Everything below is the community’s reading of demo footage and tooltips. Nothing is confirmed.
The big open questions
- How much Intellect does Champion of the Light convert? Only rank 1 has been read from footage: “up to 33% of your Intellect.” One calculator extrapolates rank 3 to 100%, another leaves it at 33%. At 100%, dipping 28 points into Retribution is the best healing and damage build. At 33%, deep Holy is as good and safer.
- Will Champion of the Light keep its healing half? Season of Discovery had the same idea and Blizzard made it damage-only. Blizzard said on stage they don’t want paladins healing groups the way other healers do.
- Will Light’s Vigil get cheaper or instant? The 31-point Holy capstone is a 1.5-second cast that costs about 730 mana at demo values. The channel’s verdict is “niche burst tool” unless the cost drops.
- Is Illumination really 50% now? The tooltip reads as a 50%-of-base-cost refund on crit heals at max rank, down from 100% in Classic.
- Is Holy Strike normalized, and does it scale with spell power? The new Ret strike does holy damage and bypasses armor. If it isn’t normalized, slow two-handers win; the channel is split.
- What is PvP beyond battlegrounds? The demo’s arena NPC only queues Warsong Gulch and ranks are a pure honor bar to 14 that resets each season. Faction lock and PvE-to-PvP transfers on the single PvP realm are unresolved.
- Will the Judgement taunt get fixed? Prot’s taunt is Judgement of Fury, so a main tank has to swap seals to taunt and eats taunt diminishing returns if it judges Fury on cooldown. The channel agrees it is bad design and plans beta feedback. No separate taunt has been seen through level 38.
- Does Prot scale with spell power or Strength? Holy Strike is weapon damage and no Prot talent converts Intellect, but Seal of Fury, Consecration and Holy Shield should scale with spell power if Classic rules hold. No coefficients are known.
- Is Consecration’s 4-target cap the end of AoE tanking? Full damage to 4 targets, about 80% less beyond. Blizzard says the cap is deliberate. Most of the channel calls it fine; one person calls the spec dead.
What Blizzard has said
- Holy Paladins are meant to be the best single-target healer with the longest-lasting mana, and to have limited party healing that requires planning ahead with Light’s Vigil (deep dive, 1:13:35).
- Light’s Vigil exists because paladins had no way to heal a party, but Blizzard does not want them to do it the way priests, druids or shamans do (deep dive, 1:08:28).
- Holy Shock plus Champion of the Light is the intended alternative to seal twisting for damage (deep dive).
- Champion of the Light gives spell damage and healing from Intellect (deep dive, 1:11:46).
- Relayed secondhand from the PvP channel, no source link: one PvP mega realm with no war mode; twisting is not mandatory and “Twist of Light is our answer to your love for twisting”; paladins will want both Strength and spell power; “some kind of faction balance” is planned.
- Relayed secondhand from the Prot channel, no source link: dungeons are meant to be tactical, “CC and threat matter”, and AoE potential was cut on purpose to stop AoE farming stacks; “seal busywork is bad”; “you don’t wanna get crit as a tank” and every piece of gear, epics included, is being redone; weapon skill stays but with less per item; the 10-yard paladin taunt was framed as an advantage.
Quick facts
- Hit is unified across melee, spells and ranged. Crit too.
- Seals are no longer consumed by Judgement.
- Lay on Hands is a 20-minute cooldown; the Improved talent is gone.
- Consecration and Blessing of Kings are baseline.
- Undead can be paladins. Human got +5% Spirit and +2% spell crit.
- Every priest gets Fear Ward. Gnome priests get a cheat-death racial.
- Talent calculators read from the demo show 51 points at level 60.
- Classic seal twisting is gone; the Ret talent Twist of Light brings a weaker version back. Reckoning does not work with it.
- Holy has a 6-second silence immunity talent and reduced fear and disorient duration.
- Prot’s taunt is Judgement of Fury (10-yard range). Seal of Fury puts a small absorb on melee hits that refunds mana when it breaks. Judgement is off the global cooldown.
- Consecration does full damage to the first 4 targets and about 80% less to the rest.
- Holy Shield is still the 31-point Prot capstone: +20% block (down from 30%), 4 charges, about double the block damage. Templar’s Bulwark (21 points) absorbs 100% of max health on a 5-minute cooldown.
- Spell power appears on items from level 10, including crafted plate with Strength. Legacy talent points start at level 5.
- PvP vendor gear is labeled “Premier”, bought with honor, and looks weaker than vanilla equivalents in the demo. Hardcore characters that die can continue on the PvP realm.
